“I think I can sense a victim, in the castle or very nearby,” said Cleo. Still alive. A convert. The first she's made, perhaps. Interesting development.”

Clay looked startled. He searched his own mind, trying to find some psychic trace of their quarry. But nothing presented itself.

“We didn't know the Insane One could do that!” he blurted out. “What other powers might she have?”

Cleo shrugged, looked over to the bunk where Kelly was tending to the being that had been Helga.

“Even if she recruits one or two locals we still have the advantage,” Cleo declared. “In terms of numbers, knowledge, and of course in self-control.”

That's a matter of opinion, thought Clay.

Cleo detected the skepticism immediately and said, “Ouroboros demands loyalty, Jonathan. She is greater than all of us, than all humanity. What we must do is unpleasant, but there's really no other way. The Insane One is a damaged vessel. Normally, we would simply leave her to her madness. But we need the secret she guards. At the very least, we can't risk anyone else getting it.”

Clay passed a nervous hand over his face.

“The nearer we get, the more disruptive she becomes,” he complained. “You can sense her now. She haunts my nightmares and Kelly's of course. Soon she will be whispering her madness into all our minds while we're awake.”

“Some things must be endured for the greater good,” said Cleo. “If we are to bring about a new age of Ouroboros, we need more power. And that power lies in Mista Venja, according to you, Jonathan.”

The tall woman stood up.

“We need to tell the management we're leaving after the circus gets to Krakow,” she said. “The cover won't be needed anyway. The only person that matters knows we're coming.”

Reluctantly, Clay stood and followed her to the door of the trailer.

“What if Steiger and this Valentine person get there before us?” he asked. “According to Kelly her father knows about the castle.”

Cleo smiled as she opened the door to admit the sounds of the circus folk striking camp.

“If they get there first, they might defeat the Insane One and save us the trouble,” she said. “But I wouldn't bank on it.”
